Relocating Electrical Circuits, Panels, or Service Components
When Electrical Components Are Relocated
Electrical circuits, panels, or service components are relocated when layouts change, loads are modified, or existing systems no longer align with the building’s configuration or code requirements. These changes can affect branch circuits, panel locations, service equipment, grounding, and capacity and must be evaluated to maintain safety and system reliability.
Permitting and Licensed Trade Requirements
In Florida, electrical work may only be performed by a properly licensed electrical contractor. Relocating electrical circuits, panels, or service components requires building permits and inspections, and a licensed electrician must be listed on the permit and perform the electrical work. Approved plans define equipment ratings, circuit routing, grounding methods, and connection details, which are verified during inspections before systems are energized or concealed.
General Contractor Oversight and Coordination
While electrical work must be completed by a licensed electrician, the licensed general contractor remains responsible for the project as a whole. This includes coordinating permitted scope, sequencing electrical work with other trades, scheduling inspections, and ensuring all work complies with approved plans and applicable code requirements. If inspections identify deficiencies, corrections are coordinated with the licensed electrician and re-inspections are scheduled to prevent delays or compliance issues.
